Special Interest groups
We have a very wide range of photographers within the Society. Many of our members choose to join our special interest groups. These groups are free to join and open to all members. If you would like to get involved, please send an email to the member running the group.
Note: Some groups may have a limit on numbers and so it may not be possible to get involved in some groups immediately.

Landscape Photography group (run by Phillip Edwards & Dominic Lester)
The Landscape Special Interest Group meets for regular shoots, exhibition visits and to share and discuss work. We also organise workshops with professional photographers to improve our skills and fine-tune composition and technical understanding.
We’re a friendly bunch of around 20 GPS members with varying skill levels, and with a love of landscapes and photography in common.
See the calendar for details of our upcoming events and, to join, drop an email to Phil and Dom ([email protected])

Wildlife and Nature Photography group
(run by Willie Jamieson & Rita Daubeney )
The Wildlife and Nature Special Interest Group (W&N SIG) is a very active, friendly group that loves to take images of all things nature related. The members shoot at all levels from beginner to accomplished, but we help each other to develop our skills with the more experienced willingly sharing their knowledge. We run regular shoots, workshops and image review sessions all aimed at learning new skills, gaining new photography experiences and having fun.
We have at least one shoot per month from early spring through to late autumn and occasional shoots during the winter months. We cover as many types of nature as we can, with shoots covering seasonal flowers, butterflies, insects, birds and mammals.
Most of our shoots are within easy driving distance of Guildford, with occasional forays, further afield.
Anyone with an interest in W&N photography, thinking of joining the GPS (or an existing member looking to expand their scope), is welcome to join us on one of our shoots or at an image review session.
For more information, please contact Willie Jamieson or Rita Daubeney at [email protected].
The images above are all from our recent shoots.
A visit to Bushy Park in Spring 2021 resulted in great shots of Herons, other aquatic birds and of course lots of deer. Some of these shots are reproduced below.

In July 2021 a group from the W&N SIG visited Bempton Cliffs in East Yorkshire to photograph Gannets and other cliff nesting birds. With great light, we were able to photograph birds in flight from the cliffs and diving for fish from our chartered boat. A few examples below:
Pizza & Co (Run by Paul Graber and Phil Sivell)
GPS’s Pizza & Co's SIG has been set up to encourage members to think about and develop their own personal photographic styles. It’s aimed at members who have achieved a reasonable degree of technical competence, and now want to use that foundation to create better images.
The Pizza&Co SIG hold critique evenings around 4 or 5 times per season. During the evening each of the members shows a couple of images for constructive criticism from the rest of the group. These are not competitions and there is no element of scoring the images presented, they are merely put forward for comment. Members of the group might show an image where they are unsure as to whether or not they have made the best of it, or they're not sure what merit it has. After all, assessing your own images is one of the hardest things to do. The other members of the group pass comment and may make suggestions as to how the image could be improved. In the past, amendments made to images following our critique have helped SIG members to score 10s in club competitions - but that is a side product of what we do.
Three or four times per year, the Pizza&Co SIG runs Gallery days. These normally involve a trip up to London, where there are almost always interesting exhibitions by prominent photographers to be found. Venues often visited include The Photographers Gallery, the outstanding private Huxley-Parlour gallery, Tate Modern, and the Natural History Museum - indeed wherever great photography can be seen. We typically visit three exhibitions on each Gallery day, and a pizza lunch is always one of the highlights of the trip. The opportunity to see, consider and discuss top-class work by leading names can be one of the most effective ways to improve your own photography.
We’re also thinking about adding a third string to Pizza&Co’s bow. Currently running favourite is an occasional group considering the production of photo books as a means of showing their photography. This will consider not just the pictures themselves, but issues such as text, layout, fonts etc etc. Books have the potential to be a more permanent and accessible means of displaying one’s photography.
It is not expected that our SIG members will necessarily be able to participate in all of our activities, and GPS members are welcome to dabble in as much or as little as they please.
To join the group, please send an email to Paul or Phil.

Micro Four Thirds Photography Group (Run By Paul Graber)
While most GPS activity is about the art of photography, the discovery that quite a lot of our members had made the move to the smaller and lighter Micro Four Thirds format prompted the creation of a Special Interest Group dedicated to kit, in this case the cameras, lenses etc produced mainly by Olympus and Panasonic. This Group only meets a couple of times per annum, giving the opportunity for members to try out and discuss gear and how to use it, but we do keep in touch by exchanging news between meetings.
If you’re a user of Micro Four Thirds, or just thinking about making the move, please contact Paul.
