http://www.scantips.com A site run by Wayne Fulton, the acknowledged authority on scanning. You can read his book ‘A Few Scanning Tips’ on this site or buy it online and read it more leisurely in your armchair. I understand that his site is linked to most of the major scanner manufacturers’ sites.
http://www.shortcourses.com Run by Dennis Curtin who, over the last 30 years, has been an editor, author and publisher of photography books, including Ansel Adams. He writes many books on digital photography and other digital subjects, including individual camera guides/handbooks which can either be read online or bought from him. I have one for my camera and it is very good indeed. An information-rich site.
http://www.computer-darkroom.com Ian Lyons’ website which features articles and tutorials covering a broad range of topics including: Film Scanning, Photoshop, Colour Management, Display Calibration, and Printing with Epson Inkjet Printers. His site is recommended by many others as the authority on Colour Management techniques. You can also customise your set-up by downloading ICC profiles for the various Epson papers (if your printer is an Epson, of course!) from his article on colour management.
http://www.normankoren.com Photo gallery and tutorials on photography. You can also download a program here called QuickGamma to visually calibrate your monitor if you don’t have software such as Photoshop which already provides it. Lots of interesting and informative articles on this site.
http://www.luminous-landscape.com Feature articles, product reviews, tutorials.
http://www.exploredigital.com A site which features Barrie Thomas’ excellent Adobe Photoshop tutorials. He has produced a Photoshop 7 update to follow on from Photoshop 6, which is not on the website so if you want to buy any of them I would suggest that you telephone Explore Digital 0121 350 4629.
http://www.marrutt.com/digital-printing.php This site also sells all Barrie Thomas’ training CDs, including the PS7 Update but I feel they may be more expensive than Explore Digital.
Barrie Thomas (details above) has produced a training CD entitled Digital Printing and Presentation which covers everything from how inkjet printing works, how to manage colour, etc. right through to solving common problems. I have found this CD invaluable but refer to it too often to be able to lend it out!
http://www.megapixels.co.uk MegaPixels Ltd are digital imaging, multimedia, digital cameras, film scanners, photo printers and digital imaging accessories & data storage specialists. The main advantage of this site as opposed to others is that if you want to research a product, the relevant section will show a comprehensive comparison chart. At the bottom of the chart there is sometimes a link to a review of that particular item. You can also download specifications and some full brochures from here as well in Adobe Acrobat.
http://www.ddisoftware.com Qimage – Image viewing, editing and printing software – arranges multiple prints on a page. Said to be a lot better than Photoshop Picture Package. You can buy Profile Prism – an ICC profiling tool for cameras and scanners here. Will also provide printer profiles – pre-made ICC profiles for various printers/media.
http://www.photo-forums.com A forum with threads to everything to do with digital imaging. Includes questions, answers and equipment reviews.
http://www.dpreview.com Digital imaging site providing equipment reviews etc.
http://www.ephotozine.com An online magazine founded by Peter Bargh, a photographer and journalist who writes many of the tutorials on the site. He has also written books on Adobe Photoshop. A site which is full of information on how to take pictures in all sorts of situations, tutorials on image editing, equipment reviews, dark room printing etc.
He has also produced a video ‘The Definitive Guide to Digital Photography’ which I have found very useful because it covers everything from what to look for in a digital camera right through to printing and the web. I am willing to lend it to anybody who is seriously interested in getting started in digital photography, but I will be on your back to retrieve it if you keep it for more than about a fortnight!
http://www.dcmag.co.uk The website for Digital Camera Magazine. The actual magazine itself (from W.H.Smith) comes in both CD and DVD editions and was recommended to me by Walter Benzie (at least I think it was this one). The DVD’s have more on them than the CD’s so this edition is a bit more expensive. I have found the articles and reviews interesting and there are projects using the most popular imaging editing programs. A lot of them are quite bizarre but I suppose if you follow them you do learn quite a lot about your image editing program! Some of the tutorials on the DVD/CDs are quite helpful too.
