Index of competition results
The Guildford Photographic Society runs a number of internal print and digital competitions each year. These competitions are open to all members, and are an excellent opportunity to share your work with others, and receive constructive critisism from an acredited judge.
At the end of each season, there are a number of engraved trophies that are awarded in various categories. The members handbook contains full details of the competitions, the rules of each competition, and the trophies that are awarded.
The quality of images presented for the 2007/8 season was the best yet. Click on these links for the full results of the Digital, and Print competitions.
This season saw the introduction of a new competition, the 'Mary Darke Shield' which will be awarded to the best nature image of the year. This competition was held for the first time on 31st March 2008.
Trophies were awarded this season as follows:
The 2006/7 competition season was the last season in which the Guildford Photographic Society will run slide competitions. Several members were entering into the slide competition only so to keep the competition going for others, so it was decided at the AGM that there will be no slide competition next season. In this final slide competition Dennis Read and Barry Scowen tied on points, but under competition rules Dennis was awarded the trophy because he had entered more images during the season. The Slide of The Year competition was also won by Dennis Read for his slide entitled 'Bathing Time for the Snow Monkey'

The standard of photography submitted for the competitions was once again outstanding this year. Thank you to all members who entered their slides, digital images and prints.
The 2005/6 season was the first season with a digital competition. This had a few teething problems initially, but once the intermittent cable, and the projector calibration issues were sorted out, this proved to be a great success. The Digital Image of the Year competition was won by Barry Scowen with his amazingly detailed macro shot of a fly's head, so we can look forward to seeing Barry in the Advanced class next year!. The Club class digital series was won by Veronica Barrett , and the Advanced class digital series was won by Mark Denton .
The number of members shooting on slide film is diminishing, but the slide competitions are still going strong. Remember that digital images can be printed onto slide film, and the resulting images are far higher resolution than can be digitally projected.
The print competitions continue to be the most popular, requiring a whole evening to themselves (the slide and digital competitions take place on the same evening). The quality not only of the photography, but also the printing and mounting of the photographs continues to go from strength to strength, as demonstrated by our second place position in the Surrey championships. Guildford Photographic Society will now go on to represent Surrey at the national level. The Print of the Year competition was won by Walter Benzie, well done Walter.
The Guildford Photographic Society participate in a number of competitions with other clubs, both in Surrey, and at the national level.
The list of external competitions varies from year to year, please see the program of events for further details.
